Last-minute rush to meet BR1M deadline

Malaysians have the tendency to wait until the last minutes to settle everything including updating their personal details for the 1Malaysia People’s Aid 5.0 (BR1M) cash assistance.

The lobby of the Inland Revenue Board (IRB) building at Bandar Baru Uda was crowded with those who rushed to fill their application forms in order to receive the financial aid.

R. Morali, 46, who works as a security guard in Singapore said he had no choice but to come on his day off as he left for work early and only came back late at night.

“I leave home at 5am and only reach my house in Masai at around 10pm. I also do not know how to update my particulars online,’’ he said.

Morali, would be getting the RM1,000 financial assistance under the family with household income below RM3,000 category.

An IRD spokesman said since Dec 27, people came as early as 6.30am and waited for the counters to open, as they were afraid of missing the deadline.

Restaurant waitress Norsuriayana Samsudin, 26, said she only received the application letter two weeks ago and could only make it on the last day due to work commitments.

Meanwhile, 25-year-old teacher Ang Wei Shan said she had to come on the last day as her mother only gave her the letter a day before the Dec 31 deadline.

She said she was lucky as it was her off day.

Ang said that she was updating her application under the single individual aged over 21-year-old category and would be getting RM400 soon.

The applications and updates counters were open since Dec 1, 2015.
